Wonton Soup

When we were back in Hawaii, we always used to pick up fresh sui gow and wonton skins from the Yat Tung Chow Noodle Factory in Honolulu’s Chinatown. There’s nothing like using freshly-made skins for making dumplings at home. When we moved to the Bay Area, though, we couldn’t find a fresh noodle factory here in San Jose.

However, we did manage to find a noodle factory in Oakland’s Chinatown. On the rare occasion we find ourselves in Oakland’s Chinatown (usually to have wonton soup at Gum Kuo Restaurant), we also stop by Yuen Hop Noodle Company and pick up some wonton skins, sui gow skins and some fresh noodles.

Now that the weather is getting cold, I am craving more soups and stew-type foods. This is perfect weather for a nice, hot bowl of wonton soup. But it’s just too far for us to go all the way to Gum Kuo in Oakland for a bowl of wonton soup. Besides, I figure it’s easy enough to make on my own.

Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Bacon

Winter squashes are one of the things I love about this season. Their flavor, color, texture is so "fall-like" and comforting. And they are delicious too! We recently used a squash variety called "Fairy Tale squash" for my mom’s pumpkin noodle soup.

And just the other day, I made butternut squash soup. I have to say, this butternut squash soup is EXTRA special simply because we grew the squash ourselves. And it’s EXTRA, EXTRA special because it was the ONLY butternut we got from that whole vine. Sigh…I’m not meant to grow anything besides tomatoes.

Vegetarian Chap Chye (Stir-fried Mixed Vegetables)

The day that I made the stir-fried cumin chicken, my mom decided to make what she called “Chap Chye.” It was the perfect complement to the spice-laden chicken dish. It was flavorful but totally vegetarian. So I decided to write up the recipe today. This is a good way for me to remember it as it is a new recipe for me too.
